[ Sound of Swing Big Band ]
This great band was founded by the bandleader Roger Gutzwiller in April 1983, in Basel/Switzerland. The 20-men-orchestra with singer plays a very open and particularly large repertoire including many of the numerous Jazz styles. Most popular are the arrangements by Thad Jones, Sammy Nestico, the swiss bandleader and arranger George Gruntz, and originals from the great Count Basie Orchestra. There is a lot of freedom for the soloists in the band. Also very popular are the original arrangements of the swing-aera, formerly played by Benny Goodman, Duke Ellington or Thommy Dorsey or the music 'for dancers only'. More than half of the musicians of the 'Sound of Swing-Big Band' are professionals giving the orchestra its complete sound. The Big Band is specialized in Jazz concerts and Jazz festivals.

[ Straight Ahead Big Band ]
Don't miss this one !!! Under the leadership of Steve Fischer, the 18-piece Straight Ahead Big Band plays a wide variety of music associated with famous big bands, and especially the "straight-ahead" style of bands such as those lead by Count Basie. (Hence the name of the group.) The band started in Redding in 1991, as a rehearsal band, and has since played for many concerts, club dates, fairs, festivals, parties and weddings all over the north state. The group has grown a little and changed a few personnel over the years, as happens in the band business, but Steve and a couple others of the original group are still in it and going strong, and many of the others still fill in when schedules permit. In the year 2000, Steve & his wife Nancy squeezed the band into the studio, played through 14 tunes and produced their first CD, entitled "First Take." In March of 2002, they hit the studio again for a couple of sessions, and in May their new CD, "Second Track" was born. Both CDs offer a fine variety of ensemble work, solo instrumentals and vocals in a most enjoyable big band style. If you have a chance to catch the group in a live setting, you're in for a real treat, because there is nothing that compares to a real full sized band of this type, and this group does it very well, indeed. Whether for listening or dancing, there will be something for every fan of big band music at each performance. Besides Count Basie, there are the familiar sounds of Duke Ellington, Glenn Miller, Woody Herman, and Stan Kenton to listen for, as well as newer music in the genre and tunes written and arranged by some of the band's past and present members. The big band sound that filled America's dance and concert halls for years is alive -- swinging and thriving right here in Redding!!!

The SingCo Rhythm Orchestra, formed in 1997, is a 12 piece big band, complete with the fabulous Hot Biscuit Trio, an "Andrews Sisters" style vocal group; a mens trio, "The Melody Boys" and the inimitable Doug Bowles as leader and "front man." The band specializes in the Hot Jazz of the late 1920s, the Romantic and Swingy 1930s and the Goodman, Dorsey, Miller "High Swing" of the 1940s. The leader is renowned for vocal flexibilty, singing accurately the vocal styles of Rudy Vallee, Cab Calloway, Bing Crosby, Dennis Day and Mel Torme. Dancers love the band for it's variety. Dance styles such as Charleston, Jitterbug, Lindy, Waltz, Fox Trot, Rhumba, Samba and many more are covered in a single evening with this fine band. Our Big Band, the SwingMasters, has delighted audiences throughout the area. And we've played for adolescents of all ages...from 18 to 80. At least six different religious denominations have featured SwingMasters as part of their programs.
