TOP   [ Radio King Orchestra ]
Radio King Orchestra® (RKO) has "swung" into the big band arena with a fresh new sound which continues to dazzle audiences and bring them to standing ovations at such venues as The Kennedy Center New Year's Eve Gala, The Kennedy Center Concert Hall, Millennium Stage, and Carter Barron Amphitheatre. Most recently, RKO has appeared on an episode of NBC's West Wing. In addition to an extraordinary musical performance, RKO encompasses the sophistication yet carefree nature of the cherished RatPack. Comprised of the finest musicians in the Washington metropolitan area, Radio King Orchestra® creates an enchanting evening of entertainment, as they work their way through the repertoire of Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Ella Fitzgerald, Glenn Miller, Benny Goodman, and Bobby Darin, to name a few. They embrace all musical styles with a passion that entices the "listener" to become the "dancer" which makes this group the perfect package for any wedding or private event.

Rick Gordon, one of the areas finest lead trumpet players and knowledgeable big band enthusiasts, leads RKO. With Rick's phrasing and bold commanding tone, the band has a drive that excites the room from the very first note. His credentials range from playing in pit orchestras of touring Broadway musicals to playing lead trumpet in Washington and Baltimore area big bands.

Tom Barrick sets the band swinging with his exciting artistry on the drums. His astonishing drumming technique and energy is most certainly comparable to Gene Krupa and Buddy Rich. His exceptional knowledge of tempos is sure to please any dancer and the alluring rhythms he produces are compelling forces that will not allow one to sit still.

As for the bewitching songstress, Robin Gordon, she will keep you under her spell as she croons lovely melodies with passion and sensuality. The audience cannot get enough of her angelic yet sensual tones as she works her magic throughout the room. Her energy will entice dancers to show off their moves while her divine interpretations of love ballads will cause many a relationship to warm on the dance floor.

TOP   [ Kim Richmond and The Concert Jazz Orch. ]
This is truly an orchestra rather than simply a jazz band. It was formed to provide a workshop for major concert works that include elements of both large ensemble jazz with free-swinging improvisation and symphonic colors and textures. The expanded instrumentation which contributes to the symphonic nature of the orchestra includes 5 woodwinds playing saxophones, flutes, clarinets and double reeds (oboe, English horn and bassoon); 4 trumpets; 2 French horns; 3 tenor trombones, bass trombone and tuba; rhythm section of guitar, piano, bass, drums, mallet percussion and Latin percussion.

While instrumentation and concept are somewhat similar to Neophonic orchestras of two decades back, the results differ because the indeterminant nature of some of the writing allows the leader to conduct sections so that the instruments are layered in varying ways. This also provides opportunities for the Orchestra's outstanding jazz soloists to stretch out over a free-form base. Besides writing the bulk of the material, leader Kim Richmond is featured as jazz alto saxophone soloist as well as conductor. The Orchestra has recorded its first album, entitled "Passages," for Sea Breeze Records. This CD was released in February of 1993.

TOP   [ Romance with a light swing ]
Big Band Music Small Band Prices Romance with a light swing is the creation of Donald and Kevin Arney of Hollywood, Florida, a father and son team who are dedicated fans of the Big Band Era. As we all know, the big band is a thing of the past due to the cost of employing several musicians to perform the music. With the miracle of pre-recorded musical background tracks, however, Romance has re-created many of the original sounds of the big bands without the associated cost. Kevin and Donald were musicians in many big bands throughout Florida: Kevin was the lead trombone player in the University of Miami Jazz Ensembles and Donald has directed, sung, and played in numerous big bands.

One of the most popular performers of the Big Band Era was, of course, Frank Sinatra. Romance does as many of the Sinatra songs as can be performed in a given time. When you listen to the enclosed CD, Come Fly with Us, you will see that the re-creation of the Sinatra-Big Band Era is complete with Romance Additional artists whose music is featured by Romance include Dean Martin, Bobby Darin, Tony Bennett, and Engelbert Humperdinck. A unique feature of the group is the Tommy Dorsey-style trombone of Kevin, who creates the romance of Sinatra in a mellow and loving tone.

Romance defines a time when musicians were expected to show class and flair. The band usually performs in tuxedos and white dinner jackets, giving it a very Big Band Era appearance. Available as a duo or trio, the third member is Americas Sweetheart, Gia Bradley. The music is varied, and after performing a few numbers Romance will sense the mood of the audience or dancers and play song after song that is pleasing to all. The band plays Standards from the 40s to the 90s.

All equipment is furnished by the band: its a self-contained unit, available throughout Florida, which only requires access to an electrical outlet to perform. Romance can lend style and ambience to a house party or keep an outdoor event swingin loud and long!
