[ Big Band Tradition ]
This full-sized big band, homebased in the Silver Spring, Maryland area, performs instrumental and vocal music at dances, concerts, and public and private events in the greater Washington, D.C., area. In existence since 1994, Big Band Tradition draws musicians, including music education professionals, from Washington, D.C., Virginia, and Maryland to weekly rehearsals and occasional performances. The band has a book of over 200 arrangements, some of which are written by band members and can be heard nowhere else. Their large library enables the band to play a variety of styles for a variety of occasions. Big Band Tradition performs the music both of older bands such as Duke Ellington, Glenn Miller, Tommy Dorsey, Artie Shaw, and Benny Goodman and of more modern-sounding bands such as Stan Kenton, Woody Herman, Buddy Rich, and even the New Swing of Brian Setzer and Lou Bega. Modern arrangers include artists of such stature as Oliver Nelson, Bill Holman, Sammy Nestico, Bill Potts, Tom Kubis, and Bob Mintzer. Blue Sky 5 is one of the hottest Swing bands in the Baltimore/ Washington, DC area! Sounds of the Big Band Era are the specialty of this outstanding group of fifteen professional musicians who come from Northern and Central West Virginia, Eastern Ohio and Western Pa. and have been together since April of 1998. They have two programs available, the traditional variety of rhythms for an excellent evening of dancing and/or listening to the sounds of the Big Band Era along with their fine vocalist, Cindy Moss who hails from Charleston W.Va. Originally formed in 1982, the Bayside Big Band now consists of 19 professional and semi professional musicians and vocalists. The band performs regularly throughout the Washington-Baltimore-Annapolis area. Bayside is more than able and willing to provide the big band sound to fit any occasion. The Bay Band directed by Bob Edwards is a swinging, 19-member big band which performs for both shows and dances throughout Tampa Bay. The band plays great standards and familiar melodies -- from Broadway, motion pictures and the big band era -- presented in special arrangements that feature our instrumentalists and vocalists in a very exciting way. Some of our musicians are alumni of famous big bands. Many have had careers teaching instrumental music on the high school and college level. We have a huge music library, fine sound, fronts and lighting.
Two vocalists are featured. Judi Edwards, a trained actress, photographic model and co-host of a popular Sarasota TV show, and has been singing with various groups in the area for 10 years. Doug Heale was discovered by band leader Edwards performing a Frank Sinatra show with piano accompaniment at a local club. Now Doug swings in front of a big band with original Nelson Riddle and Count Basie arrangements.
The Bay Band is a labor of love. All of the musicians enjoy playing to perfection. The Bay Band is a fixed group which rehearses regularly and performs frequently at a very reasonable rate. The band plays for grand openings, galas, fairs, fund raisers, community centers, country clubs, shopping centers, jazz festivals, civic celebrations, gospel shows, parties. The Bay Band is totally independent and receives no tax money or donations of any kind. We are free to play anything and go anyplace in the world.

This wonderful band is one of the very few still playing on a regular basis in and around Berlin. The program is a good mix of contemporary big band music and modern classics from composers like Pat Metheny, Yellowjackets, Bob Brookmeyer and the like. The band was founded in 2001 by drummer Benjamin Strauss, who has spent six years in the USA to study music. Inspired by the "Monday Night Big Bands" in New York City, the BERLIN BIG BAND is also an arranger's forum for newly written music. There are two invitations for international Jazz Festivals so far this year (2003).

Mike Barone, composer, arranger, trombonist had a big band in the 1960's for about 7 yrs. One recording is still available on 'vsop records', "Mike Barone Big Band Live at Donte's 1968" , -released in 1998. Now, he has one of LA's top bands rehearsing every week and working in LA area -Jazz Bakery and up coming Jazz Festival, The West Coast Big Band Sound, May 23rd at the Four Points Sheraton (LAX). Mike started this band in 1997 after returning to the LA area, -he was gone for 10 years. Mike has such major Jazz stars in the band as 'Ernie Watts'. Mike also has a web page in the making which will list all of his credits. He did write for the Johnny Carson Tonight for 23 years, -more than anyone else in that period. He also wrote for the 2003 Academy Awards TV show. All arangements for the Mike Barone Band are written by Mike.

The Ben Grisafi Band originated in the N.Y.area. There Ben recorded five CDs four of which have been rated four stars (excellent) by AMG (All Music Guide on their website). Having moved to southern Florida in the last 18 months have been very rewarding. He was recently named "Music Director" of the newly formed BIG BAND HALL OF FAME ORCHESTRA ( a division of the museum of the same name) He has been also appointed a trustee and Music Director of the BIG BAND HALL OF FAME MUSEUM located in the South Florida Fairgrounds in the heart of West Palm Beach area. The Big Band Hall Of Fame Museum in South Florida is the only one of it's kind in the United States, if not the world.

The museum houses such artifacts as: Harry James' Trumpet as well as Les Elgart and Billy Butterfield's horns. Buddy Rich's snare drum, Guy Lombardo's Tuxedo accessories are among the many displays in this So. Florida mecca for music nosatalgia. Gene Krupa's snare head used and autograghed by the whole band including Benny Goodman in that famous Carnegie Hall concert playinng SING SING SING! Grisafi has arranged his whole library and lists his charts on the Big Band Data base

   [ The Big Band Association ]
The Big Band Association is one of Long Island's longest running Swing bands. Dating back to 1969, the "BBA" originated as a rehearsal band for members of the Massapequa community through the town's adult education program. As the program grew, members of the group began to book playing engagements and the band began to perform in public. Through the years the "BBA" has developed a local following and the early success of the BBA has led to hundreds of performances for both public and private functions. Originally known as The Big Band Association of Massapequa due to the number of local residents in the band, the group today is made up of a second generation of professional musicians from around Long Island. Vocalist Linda Ciofalo has been singing with the group since 1983 and is a featured attraction at all performances.

Drummer Joe Tursi has been playing with the band since 1982 and since 1996 has taken on the role of band manager. Most of the band members teach music in the various local school districts throughout Long Island. Other members teach music privately, as well as tour throughout the United States and Europe. As the BBA enters it 37th year, its members take special pride and enjoyment in performing as a group and keeping alive the great music that was so much a part of American culture during the first half of the twentieth century.

Today's BBA members are thankful to those original members who, since 1969, gave us the opportunity to continue sharing the legacy of the great composers, lyricists, arrangers, singers and musicians of the Big Band era.
