Apologia A visitor to the Big Bands Database Plus has sent us information on a Poll relating people's musical preferences with their personality. The responses of thousands of people were itemized in the research. Unfortunately, we are not yet able to determine where, when, and by whom the poll was conducted. If we find out, we shall post the information here. Apparently, only 4 broad categories of music were considered: 1. Reflective and complex music
Apparently, responders were asked which type of music they enjoyed hearing, and then asked a list of many other questions to aid in determining their personality. Of course "perfect" correlation is not possible, but percentages might suggest a personality profile. As an example, if out of 100 questions, 75 were answered in a given way, that would indicate that one could be 75% sure of belonging to a stated personality. Disclaimer
Apparently, only 4 Personality traits seem to be have been considered. 1. Liberal or conservative in thought. (Open or closed minds. Introvert/Extrovert.)
Do you enjoy Reflective or Complex music: such asClassical, Blues, Jazz, and Folk music? The laboratory research seems to indicate that people high on these genres, often have the following characteristics: 1. Open to new experiences, creative, intellectual, and enjoy trying new things. In politics, they tend to lean toward the liberal side. 2. Wisdom, diversity, and fine arts are all important to them. 3. When it comes to lifestyle, high scorers in this category tend to be sophisticated, and relatively well off financially. 4. After a hard day of work, if they're not listening to music or reading a book, they enjoy documentary films, independent,
classic, or foreign films.
1. Tend to being introverted, unconventional, and artistic. 2. When it comes to morals and values, chances are that they lean toward the liberal side. 3. Consider beauty and inner harmony important principles in life. 4. When selecting a movie to watch, they prefer suspense movies, cult movies,or foreign films.
1. Don't get their 'kicks' on skydiving or rock climbing. 2. They tend to be friendly, less assertive than the average person, and conventional. 3. They tend to place a lot of importance on family security, salvation, and tranquility. 4. When they're not listening to music, watching television, or reading a book, they probably enjoy watching a dramatic movie, major
motion picture, romance movie, or classic film.
1. introverted, less assertive than the average person, and detail oriented. 2. As for politics and values, they tend to lean to the conservative side, and value intellect, ambition, and high art. 3. When it comes to lifestyle, low scorers on the energetic and upbeat dimension often come from the middle and upper classes. 4. When they're not reading, they're probably watching a romance movie, classic film, or western movie. General Caveat and Last Word As mentioned, the conclusions are only suggestive, - not absolute. For one example, this writer enjoys Classical, Blues, Jazz, and Folk music, but also doesn't get his "'kicks' on skydiving or rock climbing", values intellect, watches a Classic film from time to time, and considers beauty and inner harmony important principles in life. Apparently then, he belongs to every single category above mentioned. This brings us full circle to our starting point, and to the question, "What is the correlation between music and personality?" For many, it is an area of some confusion. Many people will wrongly jump to the conclusion that Music FORMS one's personality, while it in reality merely REFLECTS a personality? Just how much 'weight' should be placed on music as a personality forming factor. It is highly probable that music plays only a small part in forming character. Other factors such as early home life, income, films, friends, IQ, and neighborhood, among others, are most likely the principal factors in forming personality. And so, the big question remains, just how good a factor is music in determining one's personality? For this writer, music is not a very reliable determinant, and should only be considered in the most broadest of ways. Still, it's an interesting thought. |
