"Lullaby of Birdland" (Shearing)
"That's All" (Bob Haymes and Alan Brandt lyrics) THIS IS A WELL NAMED SONG..IT was the END of the Big Band Era.

By 1950, for reasons too complex to summarize, the professional traditons of songwriting ends. The mechanism that could produce, and market, great songs has disappeared. (Some of the reasons are mentioned in the "Musings" section at the top of our homepage.)

The "baby boomer" generation is now the 'market' for American songs. This group seems not to know the difference between real musical excitement and manipulated hysteria. People go to rock 'concerts' not for the music, but to be a part of a 'happening'. The "dumbing down" of America is in full swing.

The Rock Era begins, -still some fine tunes emerge.

A great many musicians, and others, have called the 1960s and up the era of NOISE. Electric string boards (erroneously called guitars), are teamed up with "gazillion" watt amplifiers. "Ears" are turning from gold to tin to lead. And, finally, deaf (the amplifiers and the earphones do take their toll). This is a generalization, of course. There is some good music being produced.

The TV; Record companies, concert promoters, are all catering to the lowest common denominator of musical intelligence. BUT, a large number of people still listen to, and immensely enjoy, the big bands and their acoustic instruments, playing in a sophisticated style. And wherever these bands appear, they are winning converts.

American (and World) music is obviously in a transitionary phase. Let's hope that the future holds something better.
