Subject: Searching For Girl Singer
I know this post is probably a "shot in the dark" as I have very little
information but thought I would give it a try. I am looking for a young
girl singer that sang with a band or maybe variuos bands ( I'm not sure)
in the early 1940's. Possibly in the Kansas City Missouri area.Could also
have been in Ohio or other areas or states. Her name might have been Jean
or Jeanette Grover, but I'm not positive. She only sang with bands as a
pastime maybe to earn money for her schooling. She did attend business
school and also worked as a secretary might have sung with bands just on
weekends. She had a sweet disposition and a beautiful complextion I only
mention this in hopes that it might trigger someones memory. If anyone
knows who this girl might be please e-mail me at...Joal63@cs.com Many Thanks

I am posting this link as I am sure many may find some interest in it. Over
the past 5 years, due to my Big Band radio program, I was afforded the
opportunity to interview and showcase the lives of most of the remaining big
band celebrities that were still with us at the time. From Les Brown & Doris
Day to Arite Shaw & Tex Beneke. There are 16 total programs I had produced
and they are all on audio CD. My work with these celebrities as well as
other venues to keep this great music alive has earned me the distinction of
being an inductee into the Big Band Hall of Fame. I'm sure you'll find my

Subject: I'm trying to find out about an old trumpet...
Hi, I have just aquired an old "Easy Play" trumpet. I have never heard of
these before but it has the lightest, fastest valves of any instrument I've
played and is very good to play. All I know about it is that it is US made (I
am in the UK), has a narrow bore and is stamped with the no. 237. It appears
to be pre-WW2 (closer to WW1, but I'm guessing) and I would suspect it was
intended for a marching band.
Could you give any guidance as to where I may be able to obtain information?

Subject: Tommy Reynolds Orch.
Tommy Reynolds's orchestra is my favorite of all the Big Bands! I
have some 46 tunes of his from issued recordings, transcriptions and
broadcasts---small output for a (sometimes) great band. Since I've
probably exhausted the existing recordings, I'm trying to piece together a
better biography than the short piece offerred by George Simon in his book
or by the 3-4 line pieces on a few internet sites. Three things in
particular I'm interested in: 1) Is Tommy still alive, or if not, when and
where did he die? 2) Are there any other pictures of the band than the
one in Simon's book? And 3) I'd love to hear from anyone who can help
lengthen my collection or discography (my own list of Reynolds' recording
is so much longer than those for sale that I suspect there may be more
lurking out there). Thanks!

Subject: Female Singer Needed.
I'm looking for a female vocalist to sing a few background vocals for a few
of my tracks. I need someone who can sing and hold notes very well. Somebody who
can sing opera or have a sort of "opera" feel would be ideal. If you can't sing
opera, but can just "vocalize" a note at the right pitch and hold it would be
great too. (Kinda like open-mouth humming.. ;p ) Location is not an issue here
as I can merely send parts of the music via email.
You'll obviously need some way of recording the vocals, but don't worry if the
facilities aren't that great, all you need is a mike and a way of getting it
into mp3 or wav format. I'll touch it up here.
No chancers! This is not a way to make money as I have none to give you. I can
merely offer credit to the vocalist if the tracks are used in any way. (eg.
Albums or soundtracks etc.. Good for the resume, no?)
Anyone interested should please contact me.

Fans of Phil Holdman & The Browsers, whose big band music and trivia
radio
show aired for twenty-two years in national syndication, can now reach them
through their web site, http://www.geocities.com/bigbandbrowsers.
The site will feature a free bimonthly big band newsletter, "Browsers
Notes". Also available will be cassette tapes of Browser radio shows,
photos, and a book about the group. The Browsers are an active group of
about one-hundred. Many made their living in the big band or broadcasting
field, such as singer Buddy Hughes, who sang with Jimmy Dorsey, Claude
Thornhill, and Gene Krupa. Others are merely big band fanatics. Between
them, they most likely have every big band era recording ever made in their
collections. Often, they are asked to provide rare records for individuals
and radio and television stations, worldwide. The group is actively seeking
an internet outlet for their first-run big band programs.

Date: 9/2/02 3:01:53 PM Eastern Daylight Time
Hi All,
Please spread the word on the super upcoming program on October 3rd at NYC's
FILM FORUM at 209 West Houston Street. You can go to www.filmforum.com and
then "Coming Attractions" for details and advanced ticket sales.
This program includes 11 wonderful just-restored 1926-29 Vitaphone jazz,
dance, comedy and vaudeville shorts. I saw the program in August when it
premiered at UCLA and I can vouch that this is the most entertaining
Vitaphone show EVER. Also on the bill is Jolson's MAMMY ('30) with recently
restored Technicolor musical sequences.
Of particular note to vintage music fans is the only film appearance of The
Indiana Five, with singer Grace Johnston, the bizarre Chaz Chase, Waring's
Pennsylvanians in EARLY 1927 with even more performing than playing, the
great Roy Fox orchestra, awesome Eddie Peabody, the hot native band in
HAWAIIAN NIGHTS, and the all girl Harry Wayman's debutantes. But the vaude
stuff is equally awesome. Unknowns Jack Osterman and especially Mayer &
Evans will have you in stitches.
All in all, a not-to-be-missed show. Three showings. Please spread the
word and try to get your tickets early!
The program....
BILLY JONES & ERNIE HARE, THE HAPPINESS BOYS (1927)
WARING'S PENNSYLVANIANS (1927)

Subject: HAS ANYONE COME ACROSS MY DAD'S MISSING BIG BAND CHARTS.
My late father was Big Band Leader and Trombone Player Eddie Curtis.
Sadly, after dad died in 1993, my mother asked a former band member,
saxophonist Roger Ayres from Tring in Hertfordshire, to find a worthy
home for dad's 400+ Big Band arrangements. It was conditional that the
charts went to a school or youth band, were not sold commercially, or
the library be broken up. Roger Ayres told my mother he had a school
that wanted them, but they had little money to offer. She allowed Roger
Ayres to purchase the library on behalf of the school? at around just £1
per arrangement. She also included dads set of custom made music
stands. Pleased that the library would benefit youth, she was happy, she
had no reason to doubt the word of Roger Ayres! A year or so ago, I
decided to re-form dad's band, with my mother's consent I contacted
Roger Ayres to see if I would be able to get access to dads old charts.
He was surprisingly evasive and non cooperative, refusing to reveal the
name of the school that had them! We became suspicious and started
making enquiries, through local newspaper publicity we have since found
around half the titles, without any help from Roger Ayres who refuses to
comment to anyone, however, many of the arrangements are either
photocopies or incomplete, made up of spares from the original sets.
They are at a school, but around 200 or so are still missing, the
current staff at the school do not know how the arrangements originally
came to be there. They have however been wonderful to me and have given
me full access to what they do have. Some of the missing arrangements
were in my dad's own writing, some commercial, some handwritten
photocopies by unknown arrangers, but mostly well known titles, a very
mixed bag! Some are of extreme sentimental value, for example, 'Debbie's
Waltz' written especially for me and completely original. I would dearly
like to find them, just to know what happened to them would be a relief
in itself. Someone out there must know where they are and who has them.
Have you played them at any time? Have they been mentioned to you? Have
you seen them advertised? Some had his name on them, either hand written
or as an ink stamp, many had small rectangular yellow stickers with the
library numbering handwritten. Some had fluorescent orange stickers with
the numbers handwritten on them. It is possible they are in Bucks or
Herts or nearby. If you have any thoughts at all, please contact me, I
will be most grateful for any leads to finding them. eMail:
Thank You. Debbie Curtis.

Hi, I am looking for anyone who might have original film, or video tape, of

Einladung

Subject: book on big bands
Hi: I'm Jack Fortes, 77, a new resident in Woodstock, Ga. My big band
experience began in 1940 in high school in Orlando, Fl. Played a little
drums before and after service in World War II, but just nuts about big band
music most of my life. In retirement, over a period of seven years writing
and rewriting, I published a book, :The Band Leader" (Xlibris. com also
Amazon.com and Barnes and Noble.com). Summary: a group of kids in high
school in California in 1939, play for school dances; guys go to college and
the early 1940s college dance band scene is covered. The group gets bold
behind leader Pete Delaney and go on the road playing one-nighters along
Route 66. Every word, every song is for big band lovers. Historical towns
along Route 66 are covered as the kids play. All old folks like me and young
guys playing the wonderful big band books will like the book.

I'm looking for information about one of my uncles, Ralph Wingert. He was in
the Horace Heidt band, and later in an armed forces band during WWII. He was
also in the Jimmy Stewart movie "Pot of Gold" about Horace Heidts musical
nights. Specifically, does anyone know which bands he worked for and when?
Also, does any one remember what music he wrote?

I'm a singer in Los Angeles who specializes in doing that great Sinatra,
Nelson Riddle, Billy May, Don Costa sound. Recently I've been hooking up
with some great legends of the era. I'm looking for bands that need a male
singer who can really swing as well as some charts. I already have found
a great source for classic charts but still need some classics i.e. "Fly
Me To The Moon" Sinatra-Basie style, etc. If you would like me to send
you a CD for you to hear me sing, or know of a source for charts or transcriptions
please e-mail me at musicomedian@iwon.com Thanks and I hope we can swing
together soon!
