Subject: : Internet Swing/Big Band Broadcast Schedules
I have recently started a one-page website listing broadcast times for many free Internet sources of swing/big-band music. Many of the weekly broadcasts include excellent commentary on the era as well as its great music. The audio is just a click away for many of the sites. It's at: http://swing-sked.wikispaces.com/
There is also a section listing swing/big-band music archives.
The site can be edited by its viewers, so feel free to add appropriate listings. Tom McKee, NC-USA

Subject: Need to find a position in a Big Band
Hi all you Band Leaders in the Midlands area of the UK. I want to join one as I have just left the VCO Big Band. Great band but limited in the outlook and ethos. They just don't want to work very often and there are no modern pops etc.
Perhaps a showband or Mecca style band would suit me best but I love singing the Frank Sinatra, Michael Buble stuff also.
Please contact for details and pictures etc.
Thanks again and please help ! ! Paul Q

Subject: Frank Gillespie Alto Sax & Clarinet Remember Him?
My Uncle was a musician in the UK, Frank Gillespie. He died in 1967, he died young in his early 40's. I know that he played Lead Alto Sax and Clarinet for Joe Loss and Sid Laurence and many other big bands. He started his career in the RAF. I understand that he was well known. We have newspaper clippings with rankings - and he is up there with the best. My Sister is called 'Laura' because he was the soloist on the Joe Loss hit in the 50s. I have googled him and found a couple of entries. Would love to know more about him and his musical career if you remember him I would be really grateful if you would share your knowledge and memories and I know my mother, his sister Angela, would be pleased Thank You.

Subject: Russ Columbo 100th Birthday tribute (NYC) Jan.11th
Please join me at my musical tribute to Russ Columbo in New York City on Friday, January 11, 2008, commemorating his centenary. We'll be giving a biographical narrative, as well as performing many of his songs (with my new, 11-piece 1930's-style orchestra, and me singing "as" Russ). I do hope some of you can make it! And please spread the word to anyone you think might like to be there as well!
Best always, Gregory Moore
(and I have a YahooGroup as well, dedicated to Russ, if you'd like to learn more about him: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/russcolumbo )
"Who was Russ Columbo?" Sadly, that's the question asked by most when his name is mentioned today, nearing the centenary of his birth (January 14, 1908). But in his short, but blazingly electric 26 years, he was one of the most popular radio, recording and film stars of the early 1930's. His success nearly equaled that of his "friendly rival," Bing Crosby, and his tragic, premature death in a shooting "accident" in 1934 forever left the question of "what might have been". He was the very first of the Italian crooners, creating the template for many who followed, including Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Perry Como...and even Elvis Presley credited him as a vocal influence. He was also a virtuoso violinist and composer, penning several songs that are still being recorded today, such as "Prisoner of Love," and "You Call It Madness (But I Call It Love)".
On Friday, January 11th, 2008, Charley O's (713 8th Avenue at 45th Street, NYC) will commemorate Russ Columbo's 100th birthday in an evening of song and remembrance. This evening will mark the New York debut of Gregory Moore and the Cosmopolitan Orchestra, a 1930's-influenced, 11-piece dance orchestra, featuring some of the top "trad jazz" sidemen in New York. Gregory Moore has spent the past 5 years researching the life and music of Russ Columbo, and this night will be the fruition of his years of research. Recently back from his writing/directing/performing debut in London's West End (Jermyn Street Theatre) with his enthusiastically-received debut show, Pennies From Heaven: The Life and Songs of Arthur Tracy, 'The Street Singer,' Moore, an operatically trained baritone, formed his band in 2007, and has collected over 400 original 1930's band arrangements, including two dozen that Columbo either performed or wrote. These songs will be interwoven into the evening, along with a pictorial narrative of Russ's life and career.
Also appearing on the evening's roster will be the legendary television and radio star, Joe Franklin, who will speak of his great admiration of Russ Columbo and his own personal collection of extremely rare Columbo collectibles. And putting Russ Columbo into historical context will be Rich Conaty, who has hosted, arguably, the greatest weekly radio program in America that features the music of the 1930's (with a heavy rotation of Russ on his playlists), WFUV-FM's "The Big Broadcast," which will be celebrating its 35th Anniversary in 2008 ( 90.7 FM in NYC, or on the web, worldwide, at http://wfuv.org/ every Sunday from 8 until Midnight). And (if that weren't enough!) the legendary New York cabaret star, Steve Ross, will be appearing as well, performing a few songs made famous by Russ Columbo.
It should prove to be a memorable and very entertaining evening. There is a $20 cover, with a $25 food/drink minimum per person at tables, or $20/2-drink minimum at the bar. There will be a dance floor, and dancing will be most encouraged. Also encouraged: DRESS UP! It's not required, but this would be an excellent occasion to really "put on the dog," and wear that beautiful vintage dress or tuxedo you've been hanging onto for years (or been wanting to buy---or borrow!). Make your reservations by calling: 212-977-0025
Send email inquiries to: cosmopolitanorchestra@yahoo.com
For more information on Russ Columbo, Gregory Moore has a YahooGroup dedicated to Russ Columbo with many photos, music files and information about him at http://www.groups.yahoo.com/group/russcolumbo/ . You'll need to join the group to view/hear the files, but it's quick, easy and free. We hope to see you there!
