Subject: Song title and artist
I could use some assistance. My mother passed away April 2, 2006. I remember her telling a story about how she chose my name ( Russell ). It involved her being somewhat overdue for delivery and a song that might have been somewhat popular around that time ( October 1949 ). I remember that the vocalist's name was Russell ( first or last? ) The lyrics included something like: " I'm so tired, or Tired of Waiting, or something about waiting for someone. I know that is kind of lean, but it's all I have to go on. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Subject: World Dance Day
On the 29th of April, as every year since 1982, World Dance Day will be celebrated all over the world by the international community of dancers and dance enthusiasts.

The International Dance Council CID has prepared the following guidelines as a useful checklist for persons institutionally involved in the wider field of dance: teachers, choreographers, group leaders, journalists, researchers, associations, suppliers, organizations etc.

Object
The main purpose of Dance Day events is to attract the attention of the wider public to the art of dance. Special emphasis should be given to addressing a "new" public, people who do not follow dance events during the course of the year.

Events
Dance Day events may be special performances, open-door courses, public rehearsals, lectures, exhibitions, articles in newspapers and magazines, dance evenings, radio and TV programs, visits, street shows etc.

Organizers
Events are primarily organized by dance companies, amateur groups, schools, associations and other institutions active in dance. Wherever possible, it is better for events to be organized jointly with a non-dance institution such as a government agency, a public school, a municipality, a business enterprise, a trade union.

Content
Organizers have full freedom to define the content of the event.

Make sure that you include general information on the art of dance, its history, its importance to society, its universal character. This can be done in a short speech, a note in the program, a text distributed to those present. By adding this dimension you make the event different from dance activities taking place any other day.

Read a message from a prominent personality, a poem, a passage from a text by a famous author.

Coordination
In order to achieve maximum success, it is important that preparations start early enough.
It is imperative to inform the press and generally the media about your event.
Notify an organization holding a central position at regional or national level, which should publish a list of events planned for Dance Day.
Entrance to events should preferably be free, or by invitation. Invite persons who do not normally attend dance events.

Location
At best, events should take place in "new" places, such as streets, parks, squares, shops, factories, villages, discotheques, schools, stadiums etc. By setting the event in original surroundings you stress the fact that this is an event dedicated to the universal family of dancers.

Great River Jazz Fest - 2006

Dates for the 21st Annual Great River Jazz Fest are: Thursday Night Pre-Fest Concert through Sunday... August 3 - 6, 2006

Welcoming Note from the Jazz Fest Director

Once again we repeat, the dates for the next jazz fest are August 3-6, 2006. Thursday night, August 3rd , is a pre-fest concert, featuring two Festival Bands, then regular sessions begin Friday, August 4th with the Patron’s Reception and subsequent Mardi Gras- style parade from the La Crosse Center to the Fest Grounds.

2006 will be the 21st Annual Great River Jazz Fest and also the Sesquicentennial year for the City of La Crosse! So there will be extra reasons to celebrate with activities in Riverside Park designed to highlight the historical aspects of La Crosse along with the great music.

And if that weren't enough, the Great River Jazz Fest will help mark what would have been the 100th birthday year for that lovable rascal Wild Bill Davison. Naturally, Wild Bill's sometime uncommonly acknowledged adopted illegitimate son, Tom Saunders and the Wild Bill Legacy will be cutting it up. With Tom will be Bill Allred, Chuck Hedges, John Sheridan, Reuben Ristrom, Charlie Braugham and John Bany - Great River Jazz Fest veterans all.

Among new faces, we are expecting the Migrant Jazz Workers band assembled by Sacramento drummer Vince Bartels which includes jazz giants Johnny Varro, Dan Barrett (on cornet), Allan Vache, Russ Phillips and bassist Jennifer Leithan.

Trevor Rippingale and the New Wolverines from Australia will also make a long-awaited return to La Crosse. This is great news for all the fans of Trevor Rippingale and his merry Aussies who have been away much too long.

And of course there will be the same elevated level of music, fun, frolic, hi-jinks, friendly atmosphere, gorgeous Mississippi river scenery, great shops and restaurants and, not least of all, small- town prices.

Speaking of the Mississippi River, if you come to town a day or so early, you might get a spot aboard the Julia Belle Swain, a vintage steamboat, which will feature a special two-hour Dinner Cruise on Wednesday leaving at 6:00 p.m., August 2nd, complete with three course meal and a jazz combo. Subject: Melody Mill in North Riverside, IL
My father, who recently lost his wife (my mom), has been reminising about the early days of their relationship. He enjoys telling stories of their dancing at Melody Mill Ballroom that was located in North Riverside, IL. I'm looking for names of bands that played there in the mid to late 40's. Tiny Hill was one and he was known for his song "Moonlight Over Melody Mill". I have been unable to locate the music or lyrcis of that song. Any suggestions about getting any of this information. We live in the North Riverside area, and even the library doesn't have any more information than I have been able to locate thru the internet. Thanks.

Johnny Warrington was a very prolific arranger of many styles, as well as a successful band leader, of popular band music until 1973. Then, suddenly, it all stopped. Why? Where?
I was told that he died alone outside a New Jersey club playing his charts, hit by a car that jumped the curb. If you know more or different information, I will see that he gets remembered for all the enjoyment he gave musicians and listeners through the hundreds of charts that he arranged.

Subject: Crooner Available
Hello,
Dave here. I am an experienced Big Band/Swing crooner available for your band or orchestra. For several years I've sung with various bands and orchestras around the NYC area- appearing at the Rainbow Room, Weehawken Waterfront Fest, Swing 46, Grand Central Partnership etc. My style could be compared to Al Bowlly, Rudy Vallee with a little early Bing and Cab thrown in. I'm great with a ballad or uptempo or novelty number and have my own charts and sheet music for smaller combos. Also, I own my own tux (a couple of types), tails/white tie as well as other dapper vintage duds. Eras of preference are late '20's-early '40's. What an incredible time for music! Subject: FEMALE SINGER SONGWRITER LOOKING FOR BANDS.
Hi im Terry and I moved to the city Guangzhou, in China about 3 mounths ago. Im 23 and i think i better state that im a girl, incase the spelling of my name left you a bit confused.

Im originally from Manchester and have been into writing and singing music since i was 12. Due to my,(up until now), shyness i had only been performing music in public for a few months back home,(not including misadviced ventures on the karaoke of course).

I came here initally to begin teaching English as a foreigh language and to explore a new way of life. This however, all comes second to my passion and need for music. Since being here i've not really had a chance to meet many bands or fellow music lovers so i thought it was worth checking this site out incase there was anyone out there in a similar position

I know it's probably a long shot, being in China and all, but if they're any bands out there looking for a funky singer then feel free to contact me.

Subject: Seeking: Info on Gloria Hart
Does any big band afficionado know any biographic information on GLORIA HART (original last name "Trotsky")? She sang with ART KASSEL for many years.

I've found all the links on the web - which generally rehash the two or three facts known about her. I'm looking for somebody who may have seen her TV show, or worked with her, or maybe is even family. She may be in her mid to late 80s today.

I'd appreciate any contact and information that you can supply.

Subject: REX ALLEN BIG BAND Celebrates JACK TEAGARDEN's 100th Birthday Anniv.
For Immediate Release:
June 30, 2005

Jazz trombonist REX ALLEN's BIG BAND celebrates the100th Birthday Anniversary of Jazz trombone and vocal legend JACK TEAGARDEN, in a special concert A Hundred Years From Today, at the Bay Area's prestigious jazz venue, The Bach Dancing & Dynamite Society, Douglas Beach House, El Granada CA, Sunday, August 21, 4:30-7:30.

Tickets for the concert are available for $30. Doors open at 3 pm for buying tickets and saving seats. Music starts at 4:30, goes to 7:30 with an intermission. Reserved priority seating for members. $5 discount for those under 25.

The 14-piece BIG BAND will showcase selected arrangements from Teagarden's own original 1939-46 Orchestra, few of which have been heard publicly in 59 years. Other special material "Big T" recorded or presented over his illustrious 37-year career will also be staged. A portion of Allen's personal collection of Teagarden memorabilia will be displayed, along with one of Jack's last horns, a Conn 4-H brass tenor trombone.

JACK TEAGARDEN is universally identified as one of, if not the most influential Jazz trombonist ever, winning or placing near the top in countless Jazz Readers Polls for decades. He's largely credited with moving the trombone into the modern era from the 1930s through the 1950s, with a singularly compelling, lyrically warm and technical dazzling approach that defied categorization by style.

Teagarden recorded the Young/Washington favorite A Hundred Years From Today numerous times from 1931 to 1960. His warm Texas-drawl vocals earned him wide praise, influenced many singers, and always carried a Blues-tinged wistfullnes that matched perfectly when paired with Louis Armstrong and His All-Stars from 1947-51. The gravel-voiced Armstrong and the cool, laid-back Teagarden "waxed" many hits, including Hoagy Carmichael's "Old Rockin' Chair, and toured the world several times.

Trombonist REX ALLEN was featured soloist with the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra in 1977. From 1978 to 1980, Rex toured with Yank Lawson and Bob Haggart's World's Greatest Jazz Band ("a dream come true working with my idols"), and was a member of the Bob Crosby Bob Cats from 1979 thru 1987. He led the new Gene Krupa Orchestra for six years.

The REX ALLEN BIG BAND, now in its 28th year, has performed three national tours, including its 1993 Salute to Glenn Miller, with The Modernaires, playing in 75 cities and 160,000 people.

Allen was chosen in 1999 to honor Teagarden on two nationally broadcast Riverwalk Jazz programs over Public Radio International, anchored by the Jim Cullum Jazz Band. Rex produces the Tommy Dorsey Swinging Years Show with singing star Connie Haines, and has shared stages with Lionel Hampton, Helen Forrest, Helen O'Connell, Phil Harris, Milt Hinton, and the Pied Pipers.

The Novato, CA bandleader acquired the Teagarden library in 1990 with the blessing of Teagarden's late widow Addie, with the promise to "put Jack's music to its highest purpose."

"The Bach is the perfect place to mark this anniversary," according to Allen, who's played the stage numerous times with his Swing Express band. "I'm not aware of any such tribute anywhere in the world. The jazz aficionados who support the Bach Society, and presentor Pete Douglas are truly world class. This special event can only happen once!"

Teagarden's greatest hits include "Basin St. Blues," his opening theme song "I Gotta Right To Sing the Blues," "Swinging On the Teagarden Gate," and others that will be performed at the Bach concert.

Allen's trombone solos will recall Tea's style and jazz vocalist Tommy Liles of Campbell, CA, will remember Jack's smokey and relaxed vocals.

Also on hand will be trombonist Wally Wells, original member and road mgr. of the 1944-46 Teagarden Orchestra, to share some "inside insight" about the mid-40s Swing scene, and a few choice stories from his long friendship with Jack.

Teagarden's piano playing sister Norma was a fixture in Bay Area Jazz circles for decades, passing away in 1996. Jack Teagarden was born August 20, 1905, and died in New Orleans January 15, 1964.

This concert is presented by The Bach Dancing and Dynamite Society, and produced by Rex Allen's America Swings Again!

I'm interested in more info on Bobby Burns. I talked to a couple who are touring in a classic 1947 Flxible bus. They said it once belong to Bobby Burns, a jazz singer, who converted it for touring in 1961. I would like to confirm the story and know more about Burns. The current owners bought the bus in Amarillo, Texas, but Amarillo is on the road to everywhere. Thanks to anyone who can help me.
