    "In Blinky Winky Chinky Chinatown", (498kb). At the turn of the 20th century, racial stereotype songs were quite popular, - including songs that parodied Jews, Germans, Irish, and of course, Chinese. In 1915, composer Jean Schwartz wrote this little ditty which was recorded (acoustically) in 1916 by the Peerless Quartet.

    Eva Taylor (vcl), accompanied by Louis Armstrong (cnt), Charlie Irvis (tbn), Sidney Bechet (sop), Clarence Williams (pno), Buddy Christian (bjo). New York, January 8 1925. Originally recorded for OKeh (Okeh 8181). These two sessions were recorded either on the same or subsequent days; The cornet player definitely changes between the sessions, although it is less clear who the trombonist is.
    Caution: Two versions of this song are extant,- this is the Clarence Williams (the composer) on piano and Eva Taylor on vocal version. The other version has a vocal by Alberta Hunter, and Lil Armstrong on piano.

    "I've Got My Habits On", (828kb. Recorded 1922. Brunswick 2181-B). The tune is doubly interesting because it was composed by Jazz musician and vaudevillian Jimmy Durante, who later became world famous as a comedian.

    "Amorettenreigen"", (782kb "Love Reigns"). Recorded 1928 in Europe by the "Orchestra Mascotte with Edith Lorand (on violin)" (Parlophone R191 matrix 34918) Lorand's history is quite interesting.

    ""Listen To The Glissin'"", (694kb). 1937 recording (Decca 1915-B matrix 63117), by Will Osborne And His Orch., with Will Osborne, vocal, and composer. During the late 1930s, Osborne used a stylistic gimmick which emphasized trombones playing into cardboard megaphones. Osborne called it "Slide Music", and this tune is a good example of what the band sounded like back then.

    "Gotta Feelin' For You", (848kb). A 1929 recording (Victor 22041-B) by "The High Hatters" (a recording pseudonym used by Victor Record's in-house band, -in this recording under the direction of Leonard Joy), Frank Luther is vocalist. The tune was originally sung (and danced) by Joan Crawford in the film "The Hollywood Revue of 1929", and here's a publicity still of Joan Crawford from that film. The song was composed by Louis Alter (m) and Joe Trent (w) -but they were not credited in the film.
