Another very interesting feature (rarely mentioned by instructors) is that once you have learned the Basic Waltz step (steps 1, 2, and 3), you have also learned the Basic Rhumba Step. (You simply repeat 1, 2, and 3, - going backwards - as steps 4, 5, and 6, and you have completed the basic Rhumba "box". (Of course the Tempo and Rhythm are quite different, but the steps: Identical! And finally, the Waltz is not only a Romantic dance, but the easiest introduction to Ballroom dancing. Tempo:
Here's a little Music for your practice sessions:
To begin, here is a Waltz video that clearly shows the Man's steps. (The lady, will of course, just use the reverse,. She will begin by moving her Right foot backwards.)
1. Left foot forward --- Quick
1. Right foot back --- Quick
The 'Basic' Steps should be practiced until both partners are comfortable and can execute the pattern easily and without any stress. The picture on the left shows the basic Waltz step for the Man, or "Lead". The Lady, or "Follow", executes the sames steps backwards (diagram shown just below the 'lead' above), starting on her Right foot. And, on the Right is shown the "Amalgamation" of steps that would be danced counter-clockwise around the Dance Floor. Join the steps together by repeating the basic figure starting on step 1. The Basic Waltz step uses two quarter turns. The 'Lead' should make his first quarter turn, to the left, on the first step of the waltz figure, and a quarter turn, to the right, on the fourth step of the basic figure. One of the lovliest, easiest and probably the best known dance in the world. When you have become comfortable with the steps, try alternating the Waltz by dancing backwards as well as forwards, along the 'line of dance'. The Waltz is one dance that especially lends itself to this pattern. |
