Bob Hilliard

Overview
Bob is remembered today for his hit songs written from the mid-1940's into
the early 1960's. (He is not related to vocalist Harriet Hilliard - who later
married bandleader Ozzie Nelson.) A partial list of his compositions would
include:

In the 1960, re-invented himself as a 'soft-rock' composer with hits as:

Roc Hillman
In his early years, guitarist and composer Roc Hillman had served in the "Dorsey Brothers Orchestra, and
then stayed with Jimmy Dorsey
when the brothers split up. Roc then held the guitar chair in the Kay Kyser Orchestra. He became a
member of the U. S. Army during WWII, and was replaced by "Boof" Turner, but reclaimed the guitar chair with Kyser's orchestra after his Armed
Forces discharge.
Roc composed or co-composed some 30 or 40 songs, including:
"My Devotion" (co-composed with Johnny Napton),
"A Gal In Nogales" (co-composed with Johnny Napton),
"Cumana" (co-composed with Barclay Allen and Harold Spina),
"Jack Benny Mambo" (co-composed with Barclay Allen),
"It Began In Havana" (co-composed with Barclay Allen),
"Long May We Love" (co-composed with Ralph Freed),
and "Come Runnin'" (words and music Roc Hillman), recorded by both Johnny Mathis and Lena Horne.
After the Kyser days, Roc has had continued success through recording, writing, and teaching. Roc currently resides in California.
Louis Hirsch
b. Nov. 28, 1887, New York, NY, USA. d. May 13, 1924, New York, NY, USA.
In his senior year at City College of New York, Louis Hirsh, (ASCAP Photo) a native New Yorker,
went to Europe for a few months. His ambition was to be a concert pianist,
and so he wanted to study at Berlin's Stern Conservatory, with pianist
Rafael Joseffy. He returned to the U.S. in 1906, but turned his efforts to
more pratical ends. Hirsch started working in the Tin Pan Alley publishing
houses of Gus Edwards, and Shapiro-Bernstein. He also began to write some
of his own music.
His first assignment was writing music for the Lew Dockstader's Minstrels.
From 1907 to 1909, some of his tunes were interpolated into various
Broadway shows, including 'The Gay White Way', 'Miss Innocence' (starring
Anna Held), and 'The Girl and the Wizard'.
Brief Chronology:
1910, 'He Came From Milwaukee' was Hirsch's first full score.
1911, Hirsh wrote the score for the 'Revue of Revues', which introduced French star Gaby Deslys to Americans.
1911, Vera Violetta was his first major success. Al Jolson became a star in this elaborate production. Gaby Deslys was sensational singing Hirsch's songs. Among the songs were:
"Gaby Glide", with lyric by Harry Pilcer.
"Come Dance With Me", lyric by Harold Atteridge.
"When You Hear Love's Hello", lyric by Atteridge.
1912 Hirsch is engaged by the Schuberts. He contributed to
1912 The Whirl of Society, starring Al Jolson
1912 The Passing Show, this was the first edition of many to follow.
"Always Together", lyric by Atteridge.
"The Wedding Guide", Lyric by Atteridge.
In 1913, Hirsch quit the Schuberts, and traveled to England, only to
return to the U.S. at the start of WW1. Now, he went to work for
Florenz Ziegfeld. Mainly with lyrics by Gene Buck, he contributed
songs to four editions of The Ziegfeld Follies

"Love Nest" (Hirsch's most successful song, and later the Burns and Allen
radio show theme.)

1922 The 1922 edition of The Greenwich Village Follies had:
"A Kiss from a Red-Headed Miss", lyric by Irving Caesar
"Sixty Seconds of Every Minute I Dream of You", lyric by Caesar.

Louis Hirsch died in New York City, in 1924, of pneumonia.
Al Hoffman
b. Sept. 25, 1902, Minsk, Russia, d. July 21, 1960, New York, NY, USA.
Overview
Al's family settled in Seattle, where he finished his early schooling.
He then went to New York in 1928, and began composing in 1930.
